The Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary in Angangueo Michoacan - See it Before It"s Gone
In fact it is listed in several books as one of those unique once in a life time places to go.
It is even listed as one of the 10,000 places you need to visit before you die.
The sanctuary is something you will always remember.
When you go, you will see monarch butterflies, on every rock, every tree branch, they will swarm around your head, and be with you in every way possible.
This place is like one of those very small sanctuaries that God still has his finger set on.
Imagine what it is like to have hundreds of thousands of beautiful butterflies swirling around you, and drifting in and out on the slight warm breezes.
For me it was like dying and going to heaven.
It makes me wonder if that is what heaven is like.
I truly hope so.
This is an unforgettable event, that every person in the world should get a chance to see, and unfortunately its very improbable that we will even have the sanctuary available for a few more years.
I cannot believe that the Monarch butterfly flies more than 2000 miles to get here.
How do they do that with those tiny wings? Oh I have been given the scientific explanation, but physically it seems impossible.
They come all the way from Canada to central Mexico, and land just between the states of Mexico and Michoacan to hibernate and mate.
What makes them do this? How do they know where to go? The butterflies cover every green leaf, every tree, and fill the sky with their color, here in Angangueo Michoacan.
The sanctuary can be walked to and through or there are also horse riding trips that will take you through the sanctuary.
When you ride it is even more fun.
Something the kids will remember forever, and when they go, they know why it is so important to find alternative fuels and ways to save the environment.
A cool place to stay and really interesting town which sits right in the middle of the sanctuary is Angangueo.
This is an ancient and one time almost abandoned mining town, which was very developed and wealthy in the 1800's, thanks to the large deposits of silver in the area.
Later the mines were abandoned when the silver was depleted, leaving the small village to falter in neglect, and abandonment.
But this same abandonment was a blessing in disguise as Angangueo has preserved lots of important samples of religious architecture, and homes.
The town is located to the west of the city of Michoacan and can be accessed either leaving from Queretaro or from the Toluca Highway.
If you are thinking of visiting Angangueo and the Butterfly sanctuary, you need to bring both spring and fall clothing.
Be sure to bring tennis shoes as you will be hiking and walking.
Although the weather is quite warm in the day, it does tend to get cold at night.
If visiting the Monarch butterfly sanctuary has been on your "to do list" but you never seem to get around to it, then now is the time.
Because of global warming, and environmental issues there are fewer and fewer butterflies each year.
Soon this beautiful effect will no longer exist.
