How to Backwash Hayward Filters
- 1). Attach a pool hose to the backwash valve opening if the filter is not located near a drain. Lead the hose into the nearest drain for easy disposal and drainage of the diatomaceous earth. Turn off the filter.
- 2). Turn the backwash valve to begin backwashing the filter. The water will start coming out of the valve immediately. As the filter is backwashing, pump the filter handle at the top of the pump ten times. This will help flush out the earth. You should notice a greenish lumpy, dirty substance coming from the hose. This is the earth. Let the filter run for about one minute.
- 3). Turn the valve off to stop the backwashing process. Disconnect the hose and pump the filter five times before turning it back on. With the filter on, add two quarts of new diatomaceous earth through the pool skimmer. Add the D.E. slowly, because you do not want to clog the filter.
