- 1). Measure the metal in question using a metal gauge. An inexpensive metal gauge will have slots surrounding it into which you slide the metal. This measurement gives you the gauge of the metal.
- 2). Locate or download a conversion chart like the one in resources.
- 3). Cross-reference the gauge with the gauge decimal in inches. For example, a 20 gauge earring is 0.0320 inches thick.
