Garden Gazebos And Their Original Designs
A modern gazebo's structure consists of a frame made from poles, and with a sheet pulled over it to create its roof. This is then staked down with pegs and guy ropes. The structure is simple and can be taken down and put up at any time. It can also be easily transported to any location you want, but original gazebo designs are very different.
The idea is the same, consisting of a roofed structure with open sides that provide shelter and a place to rest, but their designs are different. They are often made of wood or brick, are permanent and are often found in public places such as parks and landscaped gardens as ornamental features used to enhance the beauty of an area.
Follies, in architecture, are buildings that have been built purposely for decoration. The use of gazebos in such designs are very popular. Sometimes they have a purpose. Some people use them for extra housing, or for businesses, but mostly they are there for decoration. Their extravagant architecture is often used to bring the same magnificence of the main house out into the gardens. Or they are used to develop the overall theme of the garden, be it gothic, romantic, etc.
A classic example of this if the Temple d'amour (Temple of love) built in 1778 for Queen Marie Antoinette in the Jardin de la reine at Versailles. The typical gazebo type folly was given a romantic design to help enhance the atmosphere and the feel of the whole garden. And the achitecture of the piece was designed to be as majestic as the Queen herself.
These days people don't have the room or money to build something as extravegant as the Temple d'amour in their back garden. Most of the time people only need their gazebos to provide them temporary shelter from the sun, and once they've finished with it, they can take it down and store it away as opposed to being a permanent feature.
If you like spending time in your back garden everytime the sun comes out, then a garden gazebo is what you want to provide you with the protection from the sun that you need without breaking the bank or taking up your entire garden.
