Gear Pump Troubleshooting
- A gear pump may fail to prime properly due to dry gears, which can be lubricated by pouring a few drops of the lubricating liquid into the inlet or outlet port of the pump. Priming failure may also result from blockages or air leaks in the suction line. You can check the suction line for blockage and replace it if leaks are apparent.
- Excessive noise emanating from a gear pump can be caused by gear misalignment. Check the gears for chipped, marred or other faulty elements that can cause the gears to not interlock properly, and make the appropriate adjustments or replacements.
- The gear pump may consume higher than rated power due to high pump speed or excessively thick lubricating liquid. Adjust the pump speed to the rated level based on the pump model's specifications. If the liquid lubricating the gear pump is too viscous, or thick, the pump should be flushed out and a less viscous lubrication dispensed into the pump via the suction inlet.
