How to Troubleshoot a Tyan Motherboard
- 1). Shut the computer down and using the #2 Phillips screwdriver, remove the side access panel. Attach the anti-static strap to your wrist and some bare metal on the case.
- 2). Remove all cables from connections to the motherboard. Use twist-ties to bundle them out of the way for easier access to the motherboard. Remove any and all add-in cards as well, such as video card(s) or a sound card.
- 3). Remove the motherboard from the case using the #2 Phillips screwdriver to loosen and remove all of the motherboard retaining screws.
- 4). Place the motherboard on a flat non-conductive surface. Re-install the video card only if the motherboard does not have on-board video. If there is on-board video present, leave the video card disconnected. Attach the wrist strap to the bare metal around one of the mounting screw holes on a corner of the motherboard.
- 5). Clear the Complimentary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) by either capping the clear CMOS jumper, or changing the jumper to the clear CMOS position. On the majority of Tyan motherboards, the clear CMOS jumper will be next to the CMOS battery, on the lower right quadrant of the motherboard. Once the jumper has been set to clear, leave it for five full seconds, and then return it to its previous position.
- 6). Connect the motherboard to the known good power supply unit and connect the monitor to the video graphics array port on the motherboard. Power the motherboard on using the small flat head screwdriver by touching it to the two leads where the power switch was connected to. If the motherboard does not power up, swap the central processing unit (CPU) for the known good one. If it still does not turn on, then the motherboard needs to be replaced. If the motherboard powers on with either CPU but does not complete a power on self test (POST), begin removing sticks of memory one by one (if you have multiple) until it does, or swap the stick(s) for known good ones. If the motherboard still does not POST, then the motherboard has failed and needs replacing.
