How to Make Custom Fabric Shower Curtain
- 1). Most shower curtains measure 72 inches by 72 inches. To make sure your shower is average size, measure the opening from left to right and from the rod to the floor, then add 2½ inches to the width for seam allowance and 6 inches to the length for hems.
- 2). Measure the fabric and mark it using a washable fabric marker and a straight edge. For a 72-inch by 72-inch curtain, measure 37¼ inches wide and 78 inches in length, and mark the underside of the fabric along those lines.
- 3). Cut the fabric along the cutting lines, making two pieces of equal size.
- 4). Enclose the center seam by laying the fabric sections together with the wrong sides facing and sewing close to the edges lengthwise, then turn the fabric so that the right sides are together and the raw edges of the seam are inside and iron it flat. Sew the seam again using the sewn edge as your guide, making the seam allowance wide enough that the raw edges are enclosed. Iron the finished seam flat with the enclosed seam to either side.
- 5). Turn under ½ inch at each side of the fabric, iron flat, then turn under another ½ inch and iron again. Pin and sew to make side hems.
- 6). To make the top hem, turn under ½-inch at the top edge of the curtain, iron flat, then turn under 3 inches more and iron again. Pin and sew the edge in place from the right side of the fabric.
- 7). To make the bottom hem, turn under ½-inch at the bottom edge of the curtain, iron flat, then turn under 2 ½ inches more and iron again. Pin and sew on the right side of the fabric, stitching close to the edge of the hem.
- 1). Grommets are metal eyelets large enough to accommodate rings or hooks. You'll need 10 to 12 depending on how many hooks or rings are in your package.
- 2). With the right side of the fabric up, place the back part of the grommet, with the points sticking up, on the back of the fabric and push the points through the fabric.
- 3). Line up the front of the grommet with the back and use a grommet punch to attach the two parts together.
- 4). Trim away excess fabric inside the grommet.
- 5). Attach hooks or rings to the curtain and hang, and attach the shower curtain liner using the same rings or hooks.
