Located in Na Phrathat road in Bangkok and adjoining the Sanam Luang, the museum was first opened in 1874 by King Rama V with a view to showcasing the relics from the times of King Rama IV's regime. Today it holds a priceless collection of exhibits that reveal the length and depth of Thai history. This exotic collection is varied and numerous from the recovered relics of the ancient cities of Sukhothai and Ayuthaya to the exquisite jewels, weapons, statues, Asian art as well as antiques as well as the ivory and other expensive possessions of Royalty, prehistoric art and murals. One of the most world renowned items housed within the museum is the inscription of King Ram Kamhaeng which is included in the Unesco Memory of the World programme Register in 2003. This much admired exhibit that is also claimed to be the first piece of work mentioned in Thai literature is contained within the first of the six buildings of the museum, that you find on the left side as you enter and is called the Sivamokhapiman Hall.
