While reading comic books is for the most part a solitary act, nationwide there are forums for appreciators of comics to get together, meet one another and discuss their interests. In Chicago, these can range from organized interest groups to social events hosted by comic-book shops.

    Chicago Nerd Social Club

    • While not focused specifically on comics, the Chicago Nerd Social Club has volunteer committees devoted to "nerd" concerns including comic books, Japanese animation, computers, video games and electronics. The club organizes events and informs members of events they might be interested in such as book clubs, meet-ups, parties, concerts and even informative gatherings. According to its website, the Chicago Nerd Social Club has no membership fee and its events are free or require a small charge.

    The Comic Book Meetup Group

    • Third Coast Comics, a comic-book store in Chicago, organizes a group called the Chicago Comic Book Meetup. Its members meet monthly to discuss comic books and related topics. Each meeting has a different theme that encourages members to bring comics pertaining to the topic for discussion. However, people don't need an extensive knowledge of comic books to attend the meetings, according to the group.

    Challengers Comics

    • The comic shop Challengers Comics hosts comic-book related events including discussion groups called "Chattingers" and screenings of comic-related movies. On the Challengers website, you can create a profile and interact with other comic-book fans.

    Other Comic Book Shops

    • Chicago's other comic shops may prove a good forum to meet people with similar interests. Graham Crackers Comics is one of the larger comic-shop chains in the city, with three locations in the city and five in nearby cities including St. Charles, Naperville, Downers Grove, Plainfield, Wheaton and DeKalb. Chicago Comics, known for its selection of mainstream and independent comic books, co-hosts some events with Challengers Comics, such as signings and panels with comic-book talent.
