It goes without saying that if you own a car, you will have to buy auto insurance.
Getting insurance is quick and easy if you are a licensed driver.
But what about getting insurance without license? This is not easy, but it can be done under certain circumstances.
A driver's license and insurance usually go hand-in-hand.
For instance, if you run a red light and get pulled over, what is the officer going to ask for? Yes, proof of your driver's license and proof of insurance.
Therefore, generally speaking, you cannot get auto insurance unless you have a license.
The only exception to this rule is if you have a revoked or suspended license.
You might get lucky with an insurance company that takes on high risk drivers.
But you will be given a window period from the time you sign up until your license is reinstated.
If you don't comply, the policy will become null and void.
The usual period of grace is between 35 and 45 days.
Be sure to tell the insurance company why your license was revoked.
If the revocation was caused by a DUI offense or something equally serious, you can save everyone's time because it is highly unlikely that any company will offer you insurance.
But if the reason is not that serious, your chances are a lot better.
The revocation of your license is serious and applying for reinstatement is likely to be a fairly lengthy process.
To hasten the procedure make sure you fill out all the necessary forms and submit them as soon as possible.
Double check that all the information is provided.
Just one minor omission or discrepancy could delay the entire process.
If you are a youngster with a driver's permit, you could get insurance if you can prove that you are presently taking driving lessons.
The company will provide cover on the condition that you furnish proof of your diver's license as soon as you have passed the test.
You will be given a time period for this.
Alternatively you could get cover on your parents' policy.
As already stated, the bottom line is that there is actually no such thing as insurance without license.
There is no legal way of driving a car if you are not a licensed driver, no matter what the circumstances are.
You may get temporary insurance while waiting for your license to be reinstated, but if this is declined, the insurance will fall away.
