Twenty Best Things to Do in the Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands is one of New Zealand's leading tourist destinations. Centered around the towns of Kerikeri, Paihia and Russell there are many great things to see and do. Here is our list of twenty of the highlights.


1. Boat Cruise on the Bay, Bay of Islands


Visit some of the islands and go through the 'Hole in the Rock' on a cruise boat, complete with commentary.

2. Archeological Walk at Urapukapuka Island, Bay of Islands


Discover the ancient Maori sites and unique natural features of the largest island in the Bay of Islands.


3. Swim with the Dolphins, Bay of Islands


The Bay of Islands is one of the few places in New Zealand where you can swim with dolphins. A guided tour will get you up close and personal with these wonderful creatures.

4. Day Sail on the R Tucker Thompson, Bay of Islands


This is a tall ship in the old style. A day trip (with lunch included) is a leisurely and relaxed way to enjoy the water.

5. Shop for a New Zealand Souvenir at the Cabbage Tree, Paihia


In the main shopping strip of Paihia, this is one of the best stores in the country for fine examples of New Zealand art and souvenirs.

6. Beer and a Burger at the Beach House Cafe, Paihia


Set amongst the backpacker hostels in Kings Road, this is a casual place for relaxing and enjoying a drink. There is also often live music later in the week and on weekends.


7. Game Fishing, Bay of Islands


Since American writer Zane Grey made the fishing here known to the rest of the world, the Bay of Islands has been renowned for its fishing. There are many species of fish to catch here, including marlin, kingfish, tuna, swordfish, sharks and snapper.


8. Ninety Mile Beach Coach Trip


This full day trip will take you from Paihia to Cape Reinga at the northern tip of New Zealand and back again. In between you'll visit beaches and drive along Ninety Mile Beach, the only beach in the country to be part of the national highway network. If you haven't got much time to explore the Far North on your own this makes a great alternative, and the commentary is always very informative.

9. Kawiti Gloworm Caves, Paihia


About 20 minutes' drive south from Paihia, these caves are filled with glow worms and interesting limestone formations. It is well signposted from the main highway.

10. Paihia to Opua Coastal Walk, Paihia


This walk follows the coast from Paihia south to the port of Opua. It combines beach walking, some coastal climbs for stunning views and a boardwalk through some mangroves. Allow three hours one way for this 5.8 kilometer (3.6 mile) trip.
