Pakeha

Definition:

Pakeha is the Maori word which refers to non-Maori New Zealanders, more specifically those of European descent. The origins of the word are unknown, although the most likely explanation is that it comes from 'pakepakeha', a fair skinned and long-haired humanoid creature from Maori mythology.

At times there has been some controversy over use of the word, with some quarters considering it derogatory.

In general, however, most kiwis regard it as a slang word. It's usually used within the context of some good-natured banter between Maori and their fair skinned kiwi relatives!
