Drills for California Thunderstorms
- If a thunderstorm is likely to ensue in your area, secure all objects in the home that might blow away. Pull out power cords from all major electrical appliances, and do not wash your hands.
- Stay indoors when a thunderstorm occurs, and wait inside until at least 30 minutes have passed after the storm ends. Stay away from all doors and windows. Do not use corded phones during the storm, and avoid all contact with all electrical equipment and their cords.
- Stay away from all faucets and metal plumbing lines, do not wash hands, take showers or do laundry. Do not lie down on concrete floors or against concrete walls.
- If outside and unable to enter a building, stay away from large, isolated trees. Get off hilltops, coastal beach areas or boats in lakes or on the ocean. Stay away from isolated sheds and other small structures, and do not touch any metal equipment such as golf clubs, tractors, bicycles or motorcycles. If possible, get into a hard-top car, close the doors and windows, and do not touch any metal parts of the vehicle. Stay in the car until 30 minutes after the storm have passed.
