How to Change a Dryer's Electric Outlet

    • 1). Turn off the power to the dryer circuit at the circuit breaker panel. Loosen the screws holding the outlet cover in place. Take off the cover and set it aside for later re-installation.

    • 2). Loosen the screws holding the outlet proper in the wall box. Pull the outlet out as far as possible to give yourself access to the back of the outlet. Loosen the four screws on the back of the outlet and pull the wire out of each screw terminal as it comes loose.

    • 3). Slide the wires into the new outlet and tighten the screws to hold them in place. Attach the wires in the following order: the red wire on the left, the white wire on the lower center, the black wire on the right and the green or bare wire in the center top terminal.

    • 4). Place the outlet back into the wall box and fasten in place with the screws from the old outlet. Replace the outlet cover and fasten in place with screws.

    • 5). Turn the power back on at the circuit breaker panel.
