How to Write an Extended Response Essay

104 7
    • 1). Read the question carefully. Move slowly through the question, carefully reading each word to ensure that you understand the query.

    • 2). Number the question's parts. Many extended response questions are multipart, and numbering each question part ensures that you effectively answer all parts of the question.

    • 3). Underline the question words, such as "analyze," "define" or "explain," as you come across them in the question. Each question word requires you to approach the process of answering differently.

    • 4). Begin your response by restating the question. By restating the question in your response you make the purpose of your essay clear regardless of whether the reader has read the question. Reword the question into a statement, and use it to begin your essay. For example, if the question reads, "What were the main causes of the Great Depression?" Begin your response by saying, "The main causes of the Great Depression were..."

    • 5). Use information from provided passages to support your statements. By backing your statements up with fact either from passages provided on the test or from information from outside sources, you make your response more valid. Make direct reference to material within the test when using that material to back up your statements.

    • 6). Conclude by restating your stance, reminding readers of what you have proven in your essay. Rephrase the statement that you used to begin your essay and use it as an essay concluding statement.

    • 7). Edit your response for errors in spelling and grammar. While many test graders don't directly grade for grammatical correctness or proper spelling, the presence of an abundance of errors can lead to a lower score. Use any time you have remaining to read over your response and correct any errors you encounter.
