How to Know if My Child Has ADD

Instructions

1

Observe your child's behavior for any symptoms related to inattentiveness. These symptoms include: forgetting things, switching quickly from one activity to another, inability to remember details, becoming uninterested in a task or activity after only a few minutes, not listening, daydreaming, or forgetting to finish or turn in homework. Procrastination is another key indicator.
2

Ask your child's teacher about his attention levels and social interactions at school. A child with ADD will be more quiet and reserved in class and have a harder time processing information taught to him. Children with ADD tend to be very logical and struggle with abstract ideas.
3

Understand the other behaviors related to ADHD -- hyperactivity and impulsiveness -- and their symptoms. While a child with ADD may not exhibit these symptoms, a couple of them could be present. The symptoms include: moving quickly from one task to another, saying inappropriate things, engaging in risky behavior without regard to the consequences, constant talking and interrupting, and failing to sit still in class.
4

Take your child to the doctor if you notice your child exhibiting six or more of the listed symptoms for six months. Ask your pediatrician what typical behavior for your child's age is. Children are supposed to be easily distracted and will have limited attention at a young age. They are curious and learn by exploration. ADD should only be a concern if their level if inattention is much greater than would be expected for their age and if it is interfering with life activities and responsibilities.
5

Get a proper diagnosis. The criteria for diagnosing ADD includes how long your child has been exhibiting the symptoms, what normal behavior is for a child his age, and how many of the symptoms your child is exhibiting. With a proper diagnosis, your child can get medication and learn therapies to help manage the disorder.
