- 1). Determine the proper season for your type of hunting. In 2009, archery deer season ran from October 12 to November 21. Shotgun deer season was held throughout the state from November 1 to December 5, and in all areas except Cape Cod through December 12. A special season for paraplegic and female hunters takes place from October 29 to 31.
- 2). Obtain the proper hunting license. Massachusetts hunting licenses are good only in the calendar year they are issued, and expire on December 31st of that year. All first-resident licenses and out-of-state licenses must purchase a Wildlife Conservation Stamp to go with their license. An additional Archery stamp is required for those hunters who wish to hunt with bow and arrow. Resident hunting licenses are free for paraplegic individuals.
- 3). Watch bag limits. In 2009, Massachusetts had a bag limit of two antlered deer per year and as many non-antlered deer as the hunter had valid non-antlered deer permits for. Permits for non-antlered deer must be requested by July 16th of the year in which the hunter plans to use them.
- 4). Check local laws. Many Massachusetts municipalities, particularly in the western half of the state, have rules that require you to have permission from a landowner before discharging a firearm on that person's land. Check the local laws wherever you plan to hunt.
