How to Obtain an NI Number
- 1). Call Jobcentre Plus at 0845-600-0643. Jobcentre Plus conducts the initial interview for National Insurance numbers. You must be at least 16 and a resident of the U.K. to get a number. Workers coming from different countries who have eligibility to work in the U.K. should also call. Staffers at Jobcentre Plus will confirm that you need an NI number. You will then arrange a date, time and location for an "evidence of identity" interview if you qualify for a number.
- 2). Gather documents to identify yourself at the interview. You must prepare original documents. Gather full originals of as many of the following documents as you have: passport, national ID card, residence card or permit, birth certificate, adoption certificate, marriage certificate, civil partnership certificate and driver's license. You may bring a foreign passport, national ID card or driver's license.
- 3). Arrive at the interview with your documents. The Department for Work and Pensions conducts the NI interview. DWP may ask you to fill out an application at that time. Use the documents to identify yourself. DWP may ask you to obtain additional documents at the interview. You will receive a deadline date if requested to provide additional documents. Provide any additional documents as requested.
- 4). Wait for a response in the mail. DWP will let you know the results of your NI number application. It will also provide your NI number if issued. Wait up to 12 weeks to receive your National Insurance card in the mail. You can use your NI number as soon as you receive it. You do not have to wait for the card.
