How to Keep Mosquitoes From Growing in Fountains

104 19
    • 1). Turn the fountain on and keep it running at all times, even at a slow trickle. As long as the water is moving, even the smallest bit, the mosquitoes are not able to lay their eggs in it.

    • 2). Insert into the water larvicide tablets, per label instruction, to kill mosquito eggs and larva. The tablets contain a bacteria that kills mosquitoes but does not harm birds , animals or humans. Replace the tablet in the fountain at least once per month, as needed.

    • 3). Empty the fountain of all water if it has to be turned off for more than seven days. Employ a small sump pump placed into the fountain to drain the water. Direct the hose of the sump pump to a grassy area of the lawn.

    • 4). Cover any unused and empty fountains with a plastic tarp while they aren't in use. Extend the cover or tarp to the ground and weigh the ends down with bricks. This prevents rain water from collecting in the fountain.
