How to Argue Like a Lawyer

Instructions

1

Figure out what you want. The first step towards arguing like a lawyer is deciding what you want to accomplish, whether it be gaining a promotion, getting a raise or even extending your curfew, and framing your argument to support that goal.
2

Gather your evidence. Find the facts that support your case, as well as those that hurt it. Use the good facts to your advantage and be prepared to explain away the bad.
3

Prepare an opening statement. State what you want, why you deserve it, and briefly describe the evidence that you are going to use to support your position. Be succinct.
4

Make your case. Now that you've marshaled all the evidence in your favor, let them have it. Present the facts that support your position. To argue like a lawyer, you should compare your case to similar situations in which a favorable result was reached and distinguish your case from those situations that were decided differently. Apply any applicable rules to your particular set of facts.
5

Deal with the other side's argument. Listen carefully to the issues raised and address each one in turn. Explain simply and logically why your position should prevail. Be coherent and reasonable and keep emotion to a minimum.
6

Wrap it up. You've stated what you want and argued why you should get it. Now just summarize your position and the facts and evidence supporting it, and let the chips fall where they may. You can always appeal.
