How to Survive on a Small Budget for Christmas

    • 1). Enjoy free or low-cost holiday events and presentations. Attend Christmas pageants and holiday concerts at local churches. Many public schools offer band and chorus concerts for the holidays that are open to the public. Check the calendar of events in your local newspaper for live nativity scenes and announcements of other community events.

    • 2). Make your own Christmas decorations. Enjoy craft projects with your children in which you create Christmas-tree decorations and other holiday décor for your home. Use crafts your kids made at school to for your decorations. String together popcorn for your Christmas tree. You can paint the popcorn holiday colors, or just bright and cheerful hues. Cut out Christmas-card scenes, punch a hole in the top of the card for a ribbon and attach to the Christmas tree.

    • 3). Purchase your Christmas cards at discount stores and super centers. It is not necessary to order custom Christmas cards to send to your family and friends. Search for low-cost Christmas cards with scenic pictures and plenty of space to write a personalized message to each recipient. These personalized messages will mean more to family and friends than those on fancy but generic premade cards.

    • 4). Save money on your holiday meal. Ask family and friends to each bring a covered dish to share. Everyone will enjoy trying a bite of various holiday dishes. Shop at supermarkets that offer bonus buys. Many stores offer a point system in which you can earn a discount on your Christmas ham or other holiday grocery purchases.

    • 5). Take the consumerism out of your family's holiday. Volunteer to work at a soup kitchen. Visit a local nursing home to sing Christmas carols to residents. Ask your children to make Christmas cards for children who will be spending the holiday in the hospital. Celebrate Christmas by helping others rather than buying expensive presents for your children, family and friends.
