- 1). Diagnose literacy problems as early as possible and put extra support in place for children who are struggling. Collaborate with state standards and other benchmarks of success. Appoint a group of teachers to improve literacy skills at all levels. Explore the possibility of applying for government student reading skills improvement grants if this is appropriate for your school's profile. Investigate individual students' learning styles, as this will help to develop inclusive learning programs and lesson plans.
- 2). Develop some creative approaches to reading that involve parents and volunteers. Reading is best if it is not just confined to school. For instance, ask parents to become involved by reading a particular book to the child over a month. Show sensitivity, however, when the child's home circumstances might not make this easy. Start an after-school reading club that is chaired by each of the children in turn. Liaise with your local public library and involve your school in any reading initiatives centered at the library.
- 3). Evaluate the children's literary skills and the success of your program in a structured, not arbitrary, way by carrying out class-based assessments. Identify barriers at each stage in the child's development. Put additional appropriate support in place for a child who has been diagnosed with dyslexia or other special educational needs.
