103 29
Part of water conservation is about saving water.
This article will give you a practical idea on how to cut your shower time in half thus saving approximately 3,000 to 4,500 USG of water per year with the added bonus of potentially having an extra 30 hours per year to do what you enjoy.
While it may seem hard to believe, the average person, who showers daily, spends about 60 hours or about two and a half days showering every year.
While it may be very relaxing that seems to be a lot of time just to keep yourself clean.
Have you every gone camping and had to insert a quarter or dollar into a coin box before you got your shower? Did you complete your shower before you had to put that extra coin in the box? If you did congratulations.
This likely means that you are totally capable of having a shower in less than 5 minutes.
If you normally take 10 minutes in the shower you can cut your showering bills in half simply by forming a habit of showering as if you are at a camp site or under a time constraint.
I had this aha moment while camping.
I cannot remember the last time I had to put an extra coin into the coin box to finish my shower.
After timing the camp shower and identifying it was 5 minutes, I timed my typical home shower and was surprised to find it closer to 10 minutes.
A quick search of the web indicated that a 10 minute shower was the typical average.
I decided to make a quick change and begin a new habit of having a five minute shower.
I did this simply by purchasing a digital kitchen timer.
The cost was under $5.
00 and now before every shower I start the timer with the goal of beating it.
Most mornings I use the timer to time my shower for 5 minutes and basically every day I have the shower water shut off before the timer goes off.
There have even been days when I am essentially dried off before the timer beeps.
Adopting this new habit has done a few things for me.
First, it saves water.
By cutting my shower time in half I am saving approximately 3000 USG of hot water per year.
Second, I am saving about $ 60 per year in living expenses since I am using a water saving shower head.
For someone using a regular 2.
5 USGPM shower head the savings would be around 4,500 USG of water and $100 per year.
People interested in time management will appreciate the third great advantage which is saving 5 minutes per day or 30 hours per year by reducing the time spent in a shower from 10 to 5 minutes.
I find this habit of picking up the pace in the shower also gets me energized for the day.
In my other article on water conservation, I talk about the advantages of using a low flow shower head.
These handy water saving devices can reduce your water usage by somewhere between 1,600 to 3,200 USG of water per year and save you around 35 to 70 dollars per year depending on the shower head you are using.
