Where Can I Buy a Swine Flu Face Mask?

I was watching television last night, and in particular a UK topical satirical panel show called Have I Got News for You. At a certain point in the show, when talking about swine flu face masks, one of the team captains, Ian Hislop said something along the lines of "I never know when, if wearing a face mask is a selfless act, because you want to make sure that you can't possibly pass anything on to someone else, or whether it is a selfish act because you don't want to get it yourself." Paul Merton, the opposing team captain, quickly quipped back "Well, it really depends whether you have swine flu or not!"

But it got me thinking, when you see someone in the streets wearing a face mask, think not only are they only protecting themselves, but every person wearing a face mask is also protecting you and your children.
Swine flu has already reached pandemic proportions. This means that it is a far reaching serious disease reaching across a large region. It is highly contagious and if not kept under control, could possibly cause serious consequences as with the Spanish flu in the early part of the last century. Around 50 million died in that outbreak, but you have to remember then, controls and medication were practically non existent compared to today.

In contrast, between 250,000 and 500,000 people die of a flu strain every year and the virus is normally passed between humans by the usual coughing, sneezing and/or touching objects that have been infected with the virus and then touching the mouth or nose afterwards.

So, one way of preventing the spread of this virus, is to wear face masks. These have become widely seen in the very recent past with the outbreak of SARS and bird flu, particularly in Asian countries. Fortunately, both these crises have not caused widespread damage across the world (in comparison to Spanish flu), partly because of the use of these face masks.
It has been reported in Britain, that face masks have now reached severe shortage levels as more and more people are seeking to protect themselves against this virus that has already reached British shores. People are obviously concerned about it, despite cynicism as to the authorities real motives (as fear has been a great tool of governments and the like in the past), as these face mask stocks have dwindled so quickly.

So, why should you wear one? Sometimes, it is best to err on the side of caution and while face masks aren't particularly expensive to buy, some people may feel a little silly wearing them. Really you shouldn't be. By wearing these masks, you will be cutting down the chances of the virus spreading even further and at the same time knocking it back, so it is no longer a pandemic. You could also possibly be helping save lives. At the very least, you will be helping stop people falling victim to this strain and feeling extremely unwell.
