Washing Machines: How They Work

    Basket

    • Each washing machine, whether it be a top-loader or front-loader, has a basket riddled with holes that sits in a tub. A turbine spire sticks up from the center of the basket that is known as an agitator, which spins the clothes. This basket is what you fill with the clothes you want to be cleaned and holds them as they're washed. You will also need to add detergent before activating the machine.

    Water

    • The washing machine is directly connected to hot and cold water lines installed in your home. When activated, the tub and basket will fill with either hot, cold, or warm water, depending on which you chose. Once the tub fills with water, the turbine spins to agitate the clothes in the basket. Eventually the water will turn soapy from the detergent and after a few minutes of agitation, the turbine will stop spinning and allow the clothes to soak in the soap. Motors in the machine use belts wrapped around the base of the turbine to spin the agitator.

    Draining

    • After the machuine agitate and soaks the clothes in the soapy water, it will agitate the clothes again to free some of the soap from them and then drain the water from the tub. In some machines, the water will drain via the same water lines, while in older models the water will drain via a separate line.

    Rinse and Spin

    • After the water initially drains, the tub will fill back up again with clean water and run the clothes through a second cycle to remove any remaining soap or soil. After a few minutes, the washing machine will go into a spin cycle. During this, the water will drain and the basket will spin very rapidly, pulling as much moisture as possible out of the clothes so that they'll dry faster.
