    Peppermint

      Cool and refreshing, peppermint (Mentha piperita) is part of the plant family Labiatae. Also known as balm mint or brandy mint, the pungent scent of peppermint cleanses the air and removes unpleasant odors from the home. Used for centuries for food flavoring, medicinal and cleaning purposes, peppermint oil is one of the most used essential oils today. Place a few drops of peppermint oil on a cotton ball and tuck it into linen cabinets, bedding and upholstered furniture. Add a few drops of peppermint essential oil to 2 cups of water and simmer it on the stove to disperse cooking odors.

      Lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil is highly pungent, sweet smelling and refreshing. Rub a few drops of lemon essential oil on your hands to remove fish or onion odor. Simmer it on the stove to remove offending household odors or add to a vaporizer of diffuser. Add eight to 12 drops of lemon oil to laundry rinse water to eliminate sour or moldy odors in clothing.

      Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) presents a light, fresh, herbaceous aroma that dispels unpleasant odors from enclosed living spaces, pet bedding and laundry. Lavender essential oil is one of the most widely used essential oils. When added to a vaporizer, lavender essential oil cleans the air and aids in the treatment of respiratory ailments. Add 20 drops of oil to 1 cup of water and disperse it in a fine mist spray bottle. Spray draperies, linens and upholstered furniture to remove stale cigarette and unpleasant pet odors. A few drops sprinkled on pillows and bed linens promotes restful sleep while adding a sweet fragrance to the air.

      Lemongrass (Cybopogon citratus) essential oil, derived by steam distillation, is a vivid yellow color with a pungent lemon-herbacous scent. The fragrance is reminiscent of fresh cut hay. Just add a few drops to your vacuum cleaner bag to cleanse and remove heavy metals from household air. Lemongrass blends well with other floral or herbal based scents. Add a drop or two when preparing a air freshening spray with lavender or lemon.
