Space Saving Ideas
- Maximize cupboards and cabinets, especially deep ones. Install baskets that slide in and pull out so that even the very deepest parts of the cupboards can be used effectively. Use stacking shelves within tall cupboards so that the entire height of the cupboard can be used. Free up cupboard space by storing pots and pans on a pot rack suspended from the ceiling. Choose a pot rack that also has lid storage to help organize the lids. Install hooks or racks under cupboards to store cups or glasses. Install appliances under cabinets to free counter space. Place large cooking utensils in a crock on the counter instead of placing them in drawers.
- Select furniture with storage options. For example, coffee tables and end tables with drawers, ottomans with hinged lids and entertainment centers that store all of the electronic components inside are excellent ways to save space.
- Use under-the-bed storage boxes to store items such as off-season clothing. Use hooks on the wall to help children hang up clothes easily and keep bedrooms tidy. Install a collapsible clothes hamper on the back of the door for easy clean up that takes up little space.
Utilize wall space all the way up to the ceiling with high shelves in closets. Place seldom-used objects on the highest shelves. Install two parallel clothes rods in closets for twice as much hanging capacity for clothes. - Install a cabinet over the toilet for extra storage for towels and toiletries. Inside storage cupboards, roll towels instead of folding them into squares or rectangles because rolled towels take up less room. Place hooks on the back of the bathroom door for hanging bathrobes. Install a high shelf for storing soaps and toiletries up out of the way in decorative baskets.
- Install shelving along the walls to utilize wall space for book storage. If space is limited, a corner desk takes up less room than a standard desk. Purchase a desk with a hutch to create further storage options up along the wall. Consider an armoire with a fold-out desk if space is very limited. Select office machines that are compact and can be stored out of sight when not in use.
