How to Find Someone in Jail or Prison
- 1). The easiest way to locate somebody within the U.S. prison system that was convicted of a federal crime is to go to the Federal Bureau of Prisons' Inmate Locator page (see Reference 1). This page provides a simple search option using first and last names. Note that the search will not work properly unless you have the full first and last name of the individual.
- 2). If you know the state where the individual is or was incarcerated, go directly to the individual state's correctional department website. States also now have offender search options available, and some allow partial name searches.
- 3). If the individual you are looking for was incarcerated before 1982, these Internet searches might not give you correct and detailed information. In this instance, contact the Federal Bureau of Prisons directly (see Reference 2) or the correctional department of the state where the individual was incarcerated.
