- 1). Call 1-877-NJ ABUSE. New Jersey's slogan for reporting child abuse is "Make the Call, Help a Child." If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected while in a foster home, per state law, you are responsible to report your allegation to the New Jersey State Central Registry, also known as the state Child Abuse Hotline. The hotline is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When you report a suspicion of abuse or neglect in foster home, an investigator from state Department of Children and Families, Institutional Abuse Investigation Unit, will promptly investigate the allegations of child abuse and neglect within 24 hours of receipt of the report.
- 2). Tell the operator as much information as possible. Hotline operators are professionals trained especially on how to respond to reports of child abuse/neglect. According to the Department of Children and Families' website---a caller should provide all of the following information, whenever possible: who the alleged perpetrator is, what type of abuse or neglect is occurring, when the incident took place, where the child is now and how urgent intervention is needed at this time.
- 3). Step 3: Stay anonymous if you want. A concerned caller does not need proof to report an allegation of child abuse and can make the report anonymously. However, if you do provide any information such as your name or contact information, you will be protected by New Jersey laws. Any person who, in good faith, makes a report of child abuse or neglect or testifies in a child abuse hearing resulting from such a report is immune from any criminal or civil liability as a result of such action.
