Interior Molding Design Ideas

• Interior molding products come in hundreds of styles, shapes and designs. It's not just chair rail and crown molding anymore, though these make great accents when used in unexpected ways and places. Even simple trim molding can add life to dull and unexciting spaces. Use interior molding to add new looks to every room.
  
  

Living Room

• Use traditional or trendy baseboard, chair rail and crown moldings. Highlight a picture, mirror or even an empty space over the fireplace with decorative trim. Create a focal point on a wall with a large box made with fancy molding, or make multiple empty boxes and paint the interiors a different color. Trim all around windows to make them appear larger. Add fancy fretwork to a plain fireplace to jazz it up.
  
  

Bathroom

• Surround large mirrors with decorative molding. In a small bathroom, attach a surface mounted wall niche over the sink and hang a mirror inside it. The shelf becomes a little extra storage. Turn plain cabinet doors into stylish statements by adding trim molding boxes to the door faces. Use panel molding or door trim to accent windows with views.
  
  

Kitchen

• Turn crown molding upside down to add height or conceal gaps at the top of kitchen cabinets. Dress up a boring fluorescent light fixture by trimming it out with something more stylish.
  
  

Doorways

• Flat or arched doorways accentuate comings and goings in and out of rooms. Highlight them with regal wood trims and door moldings for a touch of elegance. Double doorways trimmed in multiple layers of molding can be the architectural feature or focal point of a room
  
  

Ceiling

• Add interest to ceilings with faux tin panels made of plastic or wood. Surround a center medallion with an ornate molding to create a circle in a square motif. Paint it to enhance the room's decor or make it white against a painted ceiling.
  
  

Hallway

• Add box-style wainscoting to hallways and entryways. Make equal size trim molding boxes along the walls below a chair rail. Paint the interiors a different color or add medallions.
  
  

Accessorize

• Wide crown molding corner pieces make elegant small wall shelves for displaying a framed photo. Or mount two of them to a wall and place a mirrored or glass shelf over them for more display area. Drill a hole through corbels to run a curtain rod through for a decorative window encasement. These can also be used to hold glass shelves and are sturdy enough to support a mantle over a fireplace.
