Cat Won't Take Medicine

• Before investing time on whether or not your cat will take its medication, check with your vet to see if the medicine is available in an alternative form. For example, if a medication is available in pill form and as a gel, you may want the gel as it is easier to administer than a pill. Also, consult with your vet before mixing medicine with food to ensure it is safe to grind the pill before taking. Make sure the medicine can be taken with food without ill effects.

• A popular way to get a cat to take a pill is to mix the medicine into their favorite food. When possible, mix the medicine with the cat's favorite food, such as tuna. If it is safe to do so, ground the pill as fine as you can so it can mix properly with the food. Medication in a liquid form is often easier to mix into food.

• Hold your cat gently with your non-dominant hand. Grasp your cat's head gently and try to open it's mouth. With your dominant hand, bring the pill toward your cat's open mouth. Once you place the pill its mouth, hold your cat's mouth closed gently. Try petting your cat during the experience so the cat will relax.
