My Dog Hated Our New Baby - Could Anything Save the Dog We Loved?

103 9
Our beautiful German shepherd, Jack, was a lovable member of our family-until the arrival of our first child.
He went from a relaxed and affectionate dog to an anxious bundle of nerves that would often nip or growl at the people he used to love.
It was getting so bad that I was afraid he would attack our newborn son.
My husband took him to obedience classes and although it helped a little, we could still see that Jack was having a hard time adjusting to the changes in our little family.
I was considering find Jack another home when I found a unique approach to dog training that focused on effective communication.
For instance, by calling him away from the baby then scolding him I was reinforcing his notion that our child was a threat.
Once we got over the communication hurdle, the rest was fairly easy.
In just a short time my husband and I had our lovable, secure and confident dog back! I was so relieved that we wouldn't have to find Jack another home and we now have the peace of mind that both our son and our dog are safe.
I had always thought training a dog took hard work and hours of time but I was surprised how quickly Jack learned.
I had expected a lot of frustration but it was actually fun and I forged a new bond with our dog.
He's much happier and his anxiety is a thing of the past.
Finding a really effective way to train Jack saved our sanity and kept our family intact.
It was like we finally learned our dogs' language!
