- The German language has two different words for "you." "Du" refers to an informal situation or close friend, and "Sie" refers to a formal situation or a superior. When doing business in German, always begin by using "Sie," which is more appropriate when meeting new people. Eventually, the person you are talking to may ask you to use the "du" form, which is a sign of familiarity. Be careful of taking your clue from their language, as they may use the "du" form to show their seniority over you.
- Germans often have excellent English, and pride themselves on being able to speak English well. Germans are ashamed of their country's history, and will feel as if they are being mocked.
