- 1). Indicate that you are citing to the South Carolina Code of Laws. According to Bluebook Table T.1, the abbreviation for the South Carolina Code of Laws is "S.C. Code Ann."
- 2). Indicate the provision of the South Carolina Code of Laws that you are citing. The South Carolina Code of Laws is organized into 63 titles. You will need to include both the title, chapter and provision number for the law you are citing, which must be preceded by a section sign and which are separated by hyphens. For example, if you are citing to title 4, chapter 3, provision 2, the citation should read "S.C. Code Ann. § 4-3-2", but without the quotation marks.
- 3). Indicate when the provision of the South Carolina Code of Laws was published. The South Carolina Code of Laws was originally published in 1976, and a yearly supplement of amended laws is published every year. The year that the provision of law you are citing was published must be included in parenthesis. If you are citing a supplement, you must also include the phrase "Supp." If the provision appeared in the 2003 supplement, the correct citation should read "S.C. Code Ann. § 4-3-2 (Supp. 2003)," but without the quotation marks.
- 4). Include a parallel citation to an Internet source, if available. If you are citing to a law currently in effect, it will be available on the South Carolina Legislature's website. After the citation, use a comma, the phrase "available at" (which must be underlined) and the Internet link. If citing to the law previously mentioned, the final citation should read "S.C. Code Ann. § 4-3-2 (Supp. 2003), available at http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t04c003.htm.
