Engineering Technician Requirements
- Associate degree courses in engineering technology run for two years. Individuals with a strong background in math and science are ideal candidates for the program. The general admission requirement for an associate program is a high school diploma or equivalent. Course highlights include electronics fundamentals, mechanical systems, engineering mechanics and physics. Students who successfully complete their associate degree training in engineering technology are eligible to transfer their credits toward a bachelor's degree program. Graduates from an associate degree program are eligible for certification by taking the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies exam.
- The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies offers certification programs in engineering technology. Certification programs are awarded in two areas: civil engineering technology and electrical and mechanical systems engineering technology. Prospective applicants should review the certification requirement for each program as the criteria vary. Each program category offers certification in four levels comprised of entry-level, intermediate and advanced certification requirements. Applicants must take a paper or computer based certification exam and pay the required fee.
- Engineering technicians can specialize in various fields including aerospace engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and environmental engineering. Engineering technicians can also work in research and development fields; they build or set up equipment, conduct experiments or collect data and assist scientists and engineers. Prospective students who wish to specialize in engineering technology fields should enroll into an accredited program of study. Additional specialty fields in engineering technology include industrial engineering and bioengineering technology. Engineering technology specialists can find jobs in scientific and technical service industries.
- Employment opportunities for engineering technicians are expected to be slower than average. Between 2008 and 2018, engineering technician jobs will only grow by 5 percent, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Candidates with associate degrees in engineering technology or related fields have the best employment opportunity. Civil engineering technicians are expected to have 17 percent employment growth between 2008 and 2018. Employment opportunities will also be higher for engineering technologists with advanced technical skills.
