AVI Codec Information
- The AVI codec was developed by Microsoft Corporation. Microsoft introduced the codec in 1992 with the Video for Windows software in MS Windows 3.1, allowing computer users to hear and view audio and video digital files.
- The AVI codec is a division of the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF) format, a special format for organizing and storing amounts of data. The AVI codec is organized into "chunks" or "lists." The organization of data allows for the relatively speedy transmission and presentation of multiple streams of audio and video data.
- Technology, particularly in the audio and video fields, has developed exponentially. The original AVI codec format that was released in 1992 has aged; faster, smaller and better data quality and compression is in demand. DV-AVI is newer technology that improves the quality and editing capability of the original AVI format; however, the format is "lossless" which means that the files are uncompressed and therefore very large.
