    • 1). Hold down the top "Menu" and the bottom "Play" button for about five seconds, or until you see the Apple logo, if you have a second-generation iPod. This iPod has raised buttons around the edge of the scroll wheel.

    • 2). Hold down the "Menu" and "Play/Pause" buttons in the row under the display screen for about five seconds, or until you see the Apple logo, if you have a third generation iPod. This generation is the only generation with a row of buttons under the screen instead of around or on the scroll wheel.

    • 3). Toggle the "Hold" switch on the top of the iPod if you have a fourth generation iPod. Then hold down the "Menu" button on the top of the scroll wheel and the center "Select" button simultaneously for about five seconds, or until you see the Apple logo. The fourth generation was the first to integrate navigation buttons directly into the scroll wheel, and it comes with a color or a monochrome display. It has a smaller screen and a thicker body than the fifth generation.
