Start Seeds Indoors In These DIY Pots
Starting seeds indoors is easy, too. And if you haven't already, make sure to order your seeds!
1. Newspaper Seed Pots
These are easy and quick. Just cut newspaper to the desired depth, using a few sheets together. Wrap it lengthwise around a bottle and trim, leaving some overlap. Push the bottom of the newspaper into the bottom of the bottle or can. Remove the bottle and flatten the bottom of your seed pot. Easy as pie.
2. Egg Carton Seed Pots
Save up those egg cartons, and just trim them to the depth you need. That's it, really: they function just as well as-is as seed pots for planting!
3. Toilet Paper and Paper Towel Roll Seed Pots
Likewise, saving up used toilet paper and paper towel rolls is worthwhile when you realize you can use them to plant seedlings in. Just cut them to the depth you want; you can get two pots out of one toilet paper roll and about four out of a paper towel roll.
You can leave the bottom open, or cut a few vertical slits in the bottom of the tubes and fold the flaps together to make a bottom.
4. Paper Coffee Cups
Paper coffee cups make great seedling pots. Again, be sure to put drainage holes in the bottom and you're good to go.
5. Yogurt Cups
Plastic yogurt cups can be reused as seedling pots. The individual ones work best for this purpose but you could also use the larger ones. Cut holes for drainage and plenty of them. Of course, you're not going to plant plastic in the garden, so you'll need to remove the seedlings and soil before transplanting. But then, you can reuse the cups to your heart's content!
6. Trays to Hold Seedlings
You'll need flat, large rectangular-shaped trays, with low lips, to hold all those little seedling pots. Keep an eye out for soda cases and canned goods, which come in these types of cardboard trays. You can often scavenge these from your local supermarket or grocery store. You can also trim boxes down. Look for old plastic containers as well, at garage sales and elsewhere (you can even scout out recycling centers for them if it's kosher to do so where you are!).
