The Bottom Line

This CD-ROM is essentially a powerpoint presentation on ABA read aloud by a non-professional narrator. While it's lovely to look at, and includes the basics of ABA as a teaching tool, it would be much more useful if presented in book format.

Pros
  • Beautifully designed product
  • Solid overview of the Applied Behavioral Analysis approach to education
  • Clickable table of contents
  • Reasonably priced at $30

    Cons
    • Read-aloud presentation style is very inconvenient
    • Useful for beginners only
    • Images are all stock photos -- no visual examples
    • Short on ideas for implementation in school setting

    Description
    • CD-ROM powerpoint presentation
    • Focus on Applied Behavioral Analysis used to teach language skills
    • Presented in a powerpoint/seminar style with a clickable table of contents
    • Includes no supporting materials, but does have a companion website with limited resource material

    Guide Review - Educational CD-ROM

Sharon Sexton-Braun, MS Ed. is the mother of a child on the autism spectrum who has developed a CD-ROM to support parents and educators as they help their learners to communicate in natural settings.

Ms. Sexton-Braun has created a very beautiful product which offers basic information in a surprisingly inconvenient format. In essence, it is a longish powerpoint presentation read aloud -- featuring stock photos of children and adults in various settings. Because there is no fast-forward or print options, users must sit through Ms.

    Braun's narration in each chapter.

If this CD were available in book form, or as a book on tape, it would actually be a much more useful primer. As it is, it requires the user to sit in front of their computer for a lecture -- and take notes by hand.

Users of this CD will also need to find and/or purchase signficant additional materials to actually implement the ABA approach in a school setting. Examples are fairly general and not specifically applicable to a classroom situation.
