    • 1). Begin learning about money management and thinking about your future plans as soon as you consider leaving.

    • 2). Talk to family and friends about leaving if you can be sure they can be trusted with keeping the information private, and especially, not telling the abuser you are planning to leave.

    • 3). Contact outside resources, such as a church, domestic violence shelter or domestic violence hot line. You can research these resources and how to contact them at your local library if you don't have a computer.

    • 4). File a restraining order with local law enforcement. If that agreement is broken, report the incident immediately.

    • 5). Protect your personal information, bank account numbers, online account passwords and any other information the abuser could use to sabotage you.
