Born on May 6, 1905 in Turin Italy, Carlo Mollino was one of the most extraordinary personalities in the world of architecture and Italian design. His father, Eugenio Mollino, was the founder of a prominent engineering company who constructed many grand buildings, including Torino's main hospital. While living in the culturally diverse Turin environment, he got the opportunity to interact with personalities in the world of culture and art.

In 1931, Carlo graduated with a degree in architecture from the Politecnico, Turin. His first design was an apartment in Forte dei Marmi. It was an exquisite work of art with the walls covered in colorful velvet, ceilings draped with fine cloth, curtains of perforated fabric, and a lighting system which comprised of a single lamp running across the ceiling in a great ark. This design won him the G. Pistono prize. Carlos also participated in several architectural competitions such as the Monument to the Partisan, the Fascist House in Voghera and the Farmers Association Building in Cuneo. These masterpieces were unconventional in that, they did not adhere to the rationalist school.

Other notable designs by Carlo include the headquarters of the Confederazione degli Agricoltori (1933-4), and particularly the headquarters of the Societ Ippica Torinese (1935-9) in Turin. In the latter, he incorporated spatial, material and technical ideas with complete novelty. His designs stood out not just because of their intricate decorative aspects, but also because of their ability to enable the occupant to manipulate volumes at whim. It is during this period that Carlo also ventured into furniture designs.

Besides design and architecture, Carlo also had an interest in photography, skiing, writing, race cars and the occult. He participated in the Lehman's 24 hour race in 1954 driving the ‘Bisiluro' race car which he had designed himself. He also redesigned the ‘Osca 1100' car series, thought the project never went into production. An avid skier, Carlo wrote a book outlining his own skiing technique, and went further to design a strange device for walking on snow. He also designed several mountain houses in Italy like the Slittovia of Lago Nero and the Casa del Sole.

Just before his death in 1973, Carlo designed the Camera di Commencio building and the Regio Theatre (Teatro Regio Torino), both in Torino.
