How to Paint Finished Tiles
- 1). Wash the finished tiles with trisodium phosphate cleanser, then rinse off the cleanser by wiping it with wet rags. Don't leave any soapy residue behind, or the primer won't stick. Wait two hours.
- 2). Abrade the painted tiles to promote adhesion. Sand with a palm sander and 180-grit sandpaper until the existing paint feels rough.
- 3). Cover areas adjacent to the finished tile with professional painter's tape; this includes trim, baseboards and floor vent covers.
- 4). Coat the painted tiles with latex primer using a roller and a shed-free roller cover. Use a polyester soft-bristled brush to smooth the primer before it dries, effectively promoting a neat, flawless finish. Move the brush vertically across the tiles, applying soft pressure. Wait two hours.
- 5). Wash the painting tools in a sink, using running tap water.
- 6). Paint the finished tiles with a 2- to 3-inch polyester paintbrush just as you primed them. Use an epoxy or acrylic on floor tiles and a latex finish on wall tiles.
