What Is a Proactive Approach for Therapy?
- The therapist might assign you homework at the end of the appoint. While the assignments may seem insignificant or silly, accomplish the assignments anyway. You may not see the point at the time, but accomplishing these tasks could bring on surprising progress in your recovery.
- Your therapist couldn't possibly share with you every pertinent piece of information that could be of benefit to your recovery. Thus, further reading should be taken seriously as an active approach to an effective recovery.
- You don't have to agree with everything your therapist says, but it's important to at least listen. Blocking yourself from even hearing another person's point of view--especially one of an objective expert--can be counterproductive to your progress.
- Don't miss appointments unless absolutely necessary. Even if you think the appointment will be a waste of time, you may learn something that becomes helpful later.
- If ever in a severe situation, don't be shy about phoning your therapist if he or she has offered this as an option. While you don't want to abuse the privilege, you also don't want to miss out on getting effective help in a time of crisis.
