Requirements to Become a Substitute Teacher in Houston
- The first step in becoming an associate teacher in Houston is to complete an online application. A position must be available in order for you to submit your application. Visit the Houston Independent School District jobs site and click "Search Jobs." Check the "Instructional Support Staff" box to find current associate teacher openings.
- You must be able to legally work in the U.S. in order to become an associate teacher in Houston. You must present valid identification, such as a driver's license, and a valid Social Security number at your first interview.
- All associate teacher applicants are subject to a background check. Aside from minor traffic violations, any felony or misdemeanor in your background will disqualify you for becoming an associate teacher.
- You must have a doctor's note affirming you have had a clean tuberculosis test within the previous six months.
- All associate teaching positions require at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Based on the individual job posting, some positions may require a two- or four-year degree.
- You must have two letters of recommendation from former employers. Past teaching evaluations, including student teaching evaluations, are acceptable in place of recommendations.
