- 1). Unplug the unit from the power source or, if using a gas-powered unit, disconnect the spark plug wire. Unscrew the inner spool from the power head. On some units, you can remove the inner spool by depressing small plastic tabs on the power head, located near the bump knob. Brush or wipe down the power head.
- 2). Measure two lengths of replacement string. Most units require two pieces between 9- and 12.5-feet long. Place the ends of the two lines into the small holes or notches on the inside of the inner spool.
- 3). Wind the replacement line in the direction of the arrows found on the inner spool. Stop winding with about 3 to 5 inches of line remaining.
- 4). Insert the ends of the lines into the eyelets on the outer hub. Screw or snap the spool into place.
- 5). Restore power to the unit by plugging it back in or attaching the spark plug wire.
