    • 1). Watch a bipolar person take his medicine. Often when bipolar people are in manias they will feel like they no longer need their medication and stop taking it. If someone suffers from severe bipolar disorder, his medicine intake should follow a strict routine and, if necessary, may have to be watched. If the bipolar person is young, then he will definitely need to be monitored while taking medicine. Always make sure there is enough money for refills or that the bipolar person is on a special patient assistance program for medicine. Withdrawal can be disastrous.

    • 2). Avoid petty arguments with bipolar people. Bipolar people may be very aggressive and impulsive during manic episodes. Big fights may occur and not be avoidable, but petty arguments can be stopped easily. Do not fight about little incidents or try to correct a bipolar person when he is talking. This may spark a full-fledged argument that isn't necessary or constructive in a relationship.

    • 3). Speak calmly to a bipolar person at all times during his manic episodes. Try and talk about positive things throughout the day and remain calm and follow a predictable routine. Never encourage dangerous activities because the bipolar person will be highly impulsive. Never enable a bipolar person in dangerous situations. This will only allow a bipolar person to spiral out of control and he may begin to rebel against all forms of treatment, including medicine, if he senses you will enable him with money and encouragement. Keep in mind that he is not thinking clearly during manias. You may have to talk him down and out of a dangerous idea or a blow up of aggression during mania.

    • 4). Remain positive during a depressive cycle in bipolar disorder. Do not accuse the bipolar person of being lazy, irresponsible or childish. Remember that the pain a bipolar person feels during s depressive cycle is real and volatile. Do not bring up past failures or old regrets. Instead, encourage the bipolar person to pick up old hobbies or to begin a new one and to work hard. Always let a bipolar person know that he is loved and he is not a failure.
