How to File a Judgment Lien in California
- 1). Ask the court clerk for a special lien form called an Abstract of Judgment.
- 2). Fill the form out and make two photocopies of both pages of the form.
- 3). Deliver the original and the photocopies to the clerk. The clerk will process them and return two copies to you. Retain one for your records.
- 4). Contact the recorder's office of the county in which the debtor owns property and ask what the filing fee is to record the Judgment.
- 5). Deliver the Judgment to the recorder's office with the filing fee. You may deliver the form in person or by mail. The recorder's office will record the form and notify the debtor that a lien has been recorded in the county.
