Early Christmas Verses

106 25
Verses on early Christmas cards were a quick way to bring thoughts of home to loved ones and limit the art work required.

Early post card Christmas cards often contain verses referring to singing and carollers. It was apparently more appropriate to remind the recipient of sung messages than to send a stand alone verse. The wording on this card is Merry Christmas Hear Us Sing / As the East is Growing Lighter / May the Joy of Christmas Day / Make Your Whole Year Gladder, Brighter.

This card is part of a series of cards sent to a young girl in 1909, 1910 and 1911.

The same young girl was the recipient of the cards in the Vintage Thanksgiving Cards Gallery A complete address was apparently not needed in 1910, this card found its way to her door with her house and street address and the word City. Several of the other cards in the series show different street numbers for the same child, it appears the postman knew her for she received the cards regardless of the house number on the card.

The card is marked L&E serie 2227, Printed in Germany and was postmarked in 1910. This card is in very good condition with raised ink outlining the holly design.

Cost $3 from a used bookseller.
