How to Water Potted Orchids
- 1). Water orchids in the morning or midday to allow the leaves to dry before nightfall. Add enough water so it flows freely out of the pot's bottom. Drain off excess water, as orchids should not sit in standing water.
- 2). Allow the orchid's potting medium to dry or nearly dry between waterings. Orchids prefer various levels of dryness, so experiment with length of time and degree of dryness between waterings, however, most do well in mostly dry conditions.
- 3). Water blooming orchids more often because they need extra moisture, according to Kent Kobayashi. Orchids with thin, soft foliage usually need more water than those with thick, succulent leaves.
- 4). Check the root system if the plant looks ailing; you may have over-watered it. White, fleshy roots with green tips mean the plant is healthy. Mushy brown roots indicate too much water. Cut them away and repot the plant in new medium.
- 5). Mist an orchid plant in the morning to raise the humidity level if the plant's location is particularly dry. Or set the pot in a tray filled with gravel and water.
