When you purchase a new car, you are making a considerable investment in your future. Not only are cars essential for helping people travel from one place to another, they also contribute to safety, personal image, and various other aspects of life. While shopping for your car, you likely did a considerable amount of research so that you would be prepared to recognize and select the car that would be right for you in price, features, style, and various other aspects. Now that you have the car, it is important that you do everything that you can in order to maintain that car in proper working condition. While cars will inevitably have problems once they have been driven for several years, you can decrease the problems that your car will have by always keeping up on the standard maintenance procedures.

One of the most commonly touted, and most important, types of car maintenance that should be done is having the oil changed. When you purchase a car, take time to read the warranty. In some cases, you need to have the oil changed at the dealership in order to ensure that the warranty is fully in effect. In other cases, you can take your car to any auto shop or even do the work yourself. Generally, people should change the oil in their car every 3,000 miles. Having an oil change can vary somewhat in price depending on the type of oil that you choose, the auto shop that you choose, and the various other things that are done during the oil change. There are many people who say that it is best to always use full synthetic oil in order to maintain proper lubrication in the engine. Using the highest quality oil for your car will always make a difference in performance. Additionally, you should expect to have the oil filter changed every time that you change the oil. Although you may not notice it at first, regular oil changes will help keep your engine in good condition even after you have driven many miles and owned it for a long period of time.

Another thing that will help you maintain your car is having regular tune-ups. Basically, a tune-up consists of changing the spark plugs, replacing the fuel filter, replacing the air filter, replacing the rotor and distributor cap, replenishing fluids, and inspecting, cleaning and replacing anything else that has worn down. A car tune up should be done approximately every two years or 30,000 miles. This can also be done at a dealership, at another type of auto shop, or even at home, if you feel like you have the tools and the expertise to do it yourself. You should also replace windshield wipers and other parts that become broken or are no longer functioning at full capacity.

Finally, when you want to keep your car in good condition, it is also a good idea to clean it from time to time. If you live somewhere that is cold and snowy in the winter and there is salt on the roads, this includes having the undercarriage cleaned in order to prevent corrosion. By doing basic maintenance on your car, you can keep it running well and in good condition for a longer period of time.
